Hydrocortisone valerate

Hydrocortisone valerate is a corticosteroid that is used in the treatment of various skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and rash. It is a synthetic glucocorticoid that is used topically on the skin.

Pharmacology

Hydrocortisone valerate works by reducing the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in these types of conditions. This medication is a medium-strength corticosteroid. The exact mechanism of action of topical corticosteroids is unclear. However, they are known to induce phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid.

Uses

Hydrocortisone valerate is used to treat a variety of skin conditions (e.g., eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash). Hydrocortisone valerate reduces the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in these types of conditions. This medication is a medium-strength corticosteroid.

Side Effects

Common side effects of hydrocortisone valerate include skin irritation, burning, redness, and dryness. More serious side effects may include skin thinning/discoloration, stretch marks, and hair bumps (folliculitis). Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids can produce reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression with the potential for glucocorticosteroid insufficiency after withdrawal of treatment.

Precautions

Before using hydrocortisone valerate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone, triamcinolone); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
