Realgar, also known as ruby sulphur or ruby of arsenic, is an arsenic sulfide mineral, historically used for its pigment properties. Today, it is recognized for its toxicity and is not widely used.

Description[edit]

Realgar is a bright orange-red monoclinic mineral. Its name comes from the Arabic rahj al-ghar, meaning "powder of the cave", due to its natural occurrence in volcanic sublimations and hot spring deposits. It is commonly associated with other arsenic and sulfur minerals, including orpiment, stibnite, and cinnabar.

Uses[edit]

Historically, realgar was used as a pigment in paints, due to its vibrant color. However, its toxicity and instability in light have led to its disuse in this application. It was also used in the production of fireworks, due to its ability to create intense colors when burned.

In traditional Chinese medicine, realgar was used as a sedative, antiparasitic, and topical treatment for skin disorders. However, its use in medicine has declined due to concerns about its toxicity.

Realgar is a source of arsenic, which is highly toxic and can cause a range of health problems, including skin lesions, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Long-term exposure can lead to chronic arsenic poisoning, with symptoms including skin changes, peripheral neuropathy, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
