Saint Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It's known for cloud-shrouded mountains and beaches. Many of its former sugar plantations are now inns or atmospheric ruins. The larger of the 2 islands, Saint Kitts, is dominated by the dormant Mount Liamuiga volcano, home to a crater lake, green vervet monkeys and rainforest crisscrossed with hiking trails.

History[edit]

The islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis were settled by Native Americans five thousand years prior to European arrival. The last groups were the Carib, who came from South America in the century before Columbus' arrival.

Geography[edit]

The country is one of the smallest in the world in both area and population. The capital city and headquarters of government for the federated state is Basseterre on the larger island of Saint Kitts. The smaller island of Nevis lies about 3 km southeast of Saint Kitts, across a shallow channel called "The Narrows".

Economy[edit]

Saint Kitts and Nevis has the smallest economy in the Western Hemisphere. In 2017, the country's GDP was estimated to be $1.42 billion, with a growth rate of 3.8%. The country uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which maintains a fixed exchange rate with the United States dollar.

Culture[edit]

The culture of Saint Kitts and Nevis, like the culture of many other Caribbean nations, is a blend of the traditions of its African, British, and French inhabitants.
