Motorcycle
A motorcycle, also known as a motorbike, bike, or cycle, is a two-wheeled motor vehicle. Motorcycles vary considerably depending on the task for which they are designed, such as long distance travel, navigating congested urban traffic, cruising, sport and racing, or off-road conditions.
History[edit]
The first internal combustion, petrol fueled motorcycle was the Daimler Reitwagen. It was designed and built by the German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Bad Cannstatt, Germany in 1885.
Types of Motorcycles[edit]
Motorcycles are classified into three main types: Street motorcycles, Off-road motorcycles, and Dual purpose motorcycles.
Street Motorcycles[edit]
Street motorcycles are motorcycles designed for being ridden on paved roads. They have smooth tires with a light tread pattern and engines generally in the 125 cc and up range.
Off-road Motorcycles[edit]
Off-road motorcycles, or dirt bikes, are lighter than street bikes and are built to handle dirt, gravel, mud, and other types of rough terrain.
Dual Purpose Motorcycles[edit]
Dual purpose motorcycles are designed to be used on both paved roads and off-road. They are similar to street bikes but have features that make them capable of off-road riding.
Safety[edit]
Motorcycle safety is a serious concern for riders. The most common causes of motorcycle accidents are due to helmet non-use, alcohol, speeding, and lack of training or experience.
