Barbara Polla

Barbara Polla (born 1951) is a Swiss medical doctor, researcher, and politician. She is known for her work in the field of immunology and cell biology, as well as her contributions to the Swiss political landscape.

Barbara Polla was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1951. She completed her medical studies at the University of Geneva in 1977, specializing in internal medicine and pulmonology.

Medical Career

Polla began her medical career as a researcher at the Geneva University Hospital. Her research focused on the role of oxidative stress in cell death and aging, and she made significant contributions to the understanding of apoptosis, a process of programmed cell death.

In 1986, Polla founded the Laboratory of Oxidative Stress and Aging at the University of Geneva, where she continued her research on oxidative stress and its impact on aging and various diseases, including cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
