Samsø is a Danish island located in the Kattegat sea, off the Jutland Peninsula. The island is known for its agricultural products, particularly new potatoes, but also for its efforts in renewable energy.

Geography

Samsø is located in the central part of Denmark, in the Kattegat sea. The island covers an area of 114 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 3,724 people. The island is characterized by a varied landscape, with flat areas for agriculture, hills, and a coastline with both sandy and rocky beaches.

Agriculture

Agriculture is a significant part of Samsø's economy. The island is particularly known for its new potatoes, which are a popular Danish delicacy. The potatoes are grown in the fertile soil of the island and are harvested early in the year, hence the name "new potatoes". Other agricultural products from Samsø include strawberries, apples, and other fruits and vegetables.

Renewable Energy

Samsø is also known for its commitment to renewable energy. In 1997, the island won a government competition to become a model community for renewable energy. Since then, the island has become self-sufficient in renewable energy, using wind turbines and solar panels. The island also has a district heating system powered by straw and wood chips.

Tourism

Tourism is another important part of Samsø's economy. The island's beautiful landscapes, charming villages, and clean energy initiatives attract many visitors each year. Popular activities on the island include hiking, cycling, and visiting the island's many farms and local food producers.
