Kazan

Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. With a population of 1,243,500, it is the sixth most populous city in Russia. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in Western Russia.

History

Kazan was founded in 1005 and became the capital of a powerful Tatar Khanate in the 15th century. The city was conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552 and became a part of Russia.

Geography

Kazan is located in the European part of Russia, about 800 kilometers east of Moscow. It is situated on the left bank of the Volga River and on the right bank of the Kazanka River.

Economy

Kazan is one of the largest industrial and financial centres of Russia, and a leading city of the Volga economic region in construction and accumulated investment.

Culture

Kazan is known for its vibrant mix of Oriental and Russian cultures. In 2015, the city was visited by 2.1 million tourists, which is a 20% increase in comparison with 2014.

Education

Kazan is known as the "third capital of Russia", as it is ranked third by the total number of students after Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Sports

Kazan is a major sporting centre in Russia. The city hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade, 2014 World Fencing Championships, and 2015 World Aquatics Championships.

Transport

Kazan is served by a number of transport systems including the Kazan Metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses.
