Publix Super Markets, Inc., commonly known as Publix, is an American supermarket chain based in Lakeland, Florida. Founded in 1930 by George W. Jenkins, it is privately owned and operated by its employees. Publix operates throughout the Southeastern United States, with locations in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia.
History[edit]
George W. Jenkins founded Publix in Winter Haven, Florida in 1930. The company's growth was slow during the Great Depression, but it expanded rapidly during the post-World War II boom. In 1945, Publix purchased a chain of 19 All American grocery stores and converted them into Publix Super Markets.
Operations[edit]
Publix operates over 1,200 retail food supermarkets throughout the Southeastern United States. The company's primary operating areas are Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. Publix's retail operations include grocery, dairy, produce, deli, bakery, meat, and seafood departments, as well as in-store pharmacies.
