Charles Ellis Schumer (born November 23, 1950) is an American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from New York, a seat he has held since 1999. A member of the Democratic Party, Schumer is the Senate Majority Leader, a position he has held since January 20, 2021.

Early life and education[edit]

Chuck Schumer was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to a Jewish family. He attended public schools in Brooklyn, excelling academically. Schumer scored 1600 on the SAT and was valedictorian of his high school class. He went on to attend Harvard College, where he earned his undergraduate degree, and later, Harvard Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor. However, he chose a career in politics over law.

Political career[edit]

Schumer's political career began in 1974 when he was elected to the New York State Assembly. In 1980, at age 29, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing New York's 16th congressional district. He served in the House for 18 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998.

In the Senate, Schumer has been involved in various important legislative activities. He has played a key role in issues related to finance, health care, and immigration. Notably, Schumer was one of the architects of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which aimed to prevent the excessive risk-taking that led to the financial crisis.

Senate Majority Leader[edit]

In 2021, Schumer became the Senate Majority Leader, following the inauguration of President Joe Biden and the election of Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock from Georgia, which gave the Democratic Party a slim majority in the Senate. As Majority Leader, Schumer has focused on advancing the Biden administration's legislative priorities, including efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, and infrastructure.

Personal life[edit]

Schumer is married to Iris Weinshall, who has served as the New York City Transportation Commissioner. They have two children, Jessica and Alison, and reside in Brooklyn. Schumer is known for his public presence and frequent media appearances, often discussing key issues affecting New York and the nation.
