Grappling is a general term that covers techniques used in many disciplines, styles and martial arts that are practiced both as combat sports and for self defense. Grappling most commonly does not include striking or most commonly uses minimal striking. It can be used to describe tactics that involve the direct physical engagement of opponents.
Overview[edit]
Grappling encompasses techniques used in many disciplines, styles and martial arts that are practiced both as combat sports and for self defense. Grappling actions can be subdivided into two broad categories: Clinch fighting and Ground fighting.
Clinch fighting[edit]
Clinch fighting is the part of stand-up fighting where the combatants are grappling in a clinch, typically using clinch holds. Clinching the opponent can be used to eliminate the opponent's effective usage of some kicks, punches, and melee weapons. The clinch can also be used as a medium to switch from stand-up fighting to ground fighting by using takedowns, throws or sweeps.
Ground fighting[edit]
Ground fighting (or ground work) is hand-to-hand combat, or martial arts, that take place while the combatants are on the ground. The term is commonly used in martial arts and combat sports to describe the tactical situation in which grappling techniques are applied, which generally involves both fighters on the mat. It is also used to describe the positions and techniques used in order to defend, attack or escape the opponent.
Techniques[edit]
Grappling techniques can be broadly classified into Clinch fighting; Takedowns and Throws; Submission holds and Pinning or Controlling Techniques; and Sweeps, Reversals, Turnovers, and Escapes.
