Folgers is a popular brand of coffee in the United States, and one of the largest-selling ground coffee brands in the country. The company was founded in San Francisco, California, by James A. Folger in 1850 as the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills.

History[edit]

James A. Folger, a carpenter from Nantucket, Massachusetts, arrived in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. He was hired by the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills, and by 1865, he became a full partner of the company. In 1872, he bought out the other partners and renamed the company to J.A. Folger & Co.

During the 20th century, Folgers became a nationally recognized brand. In 1963, it was acquired by Procter & Gamble (P&G). Under P&G, Folgers introduced several new products, including Folgers Flavors, a line of flavored coffee.

In 2008, P&G announced the sale of Folgers to The J.M. Smucker Company. Today, Folgers is a part of the Smucker's family of brands.

Products[edit]

Folgers offers a wide range of coffee products, including ground coffee, instant coffee, and single-serve packets. It also offers flavored coffees and a line of coffee designed for use in Keurig brewing systems.

Some of the popular Folgers products include:

  • Folgers Classic Roast: A medium-roast coffee that is the brand's signature product.
  • Folgers Black Silk: A dark-roast coffee with a bold, yet smooth taste.
  • Folgers 100% Colombian: A medium-dark roast coffee made with 100% Colombian beans.
  • Folgers Flavors: A line of flavored coffees, including Vanilla, Hazelnut, and Mocha Swirl.

Advertising[edit]

Folgers is well-known for its advertising. The brand's jingle, "The Best Part of Wakin' Up is Folgers in Your Cup," has been a staple of American television since the 1980s.
