Eastern Freshwater Cod (Maccullochella ikei) is a species of temperate perch endemic to Australia. It is a member of the family Percichthyidae and is closely related to the Murray Cod and the Mary River Cod. The Eastern Freshwater Cod is a large, predatory fish that inhabits the Clarence River system in northern New South Wales.

Description[edit]

The Eastern Freshwater Cod can grow up to 75 cm in length and weigh up to 16 kg. It has a large, elongated body with a broad, scooped head, and a large mouth lined with sharp teeth. The body color varies from olive green to brown, with darker markings on the sides and back.

Habitat and Distribution[edit]

The Eastern Freshwater Cod is found exclusively in the Clarence River system, including its tributaries the Nymboida River, Mann River, and Boyd River. It prefers deep pools with rocky or woody cover in rivers and creeks.

Behaviour and Diet[edit]

Eastern Freshwater Cod are carnivorous, feeding primarily on other fish, but also on crustaceans and aquatic insects. They are ambush predators, lying in wait for prey to come within striking distance.

Conservation Status[edit]

The Eastern Freshwater Cod is listed as endangered under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The main threats to its survival are habitat degradation, pollution, and illegal fishing.
