Canopy Growth Corporation is a cannabis company based in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 2013 by Bruce Linton and Chuck Rifici, and it was formerly known as Tweed Marijuana Inc. The company is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) under the ticker symbol "WEED" and on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol "CGC".

History[edit]

Canopy Growth was the first federally regulated, licensed, publicly traded cannabis producer in North America. It was also the first billion-dollar cannabis corporation. In 2018, Canopy Growth acquired the assets of Ebbu, a Colorado-based hemp researcher, to integrate into its hemp and THC-rich cannabis genetic breeding program and its cannabis-infused beverage capabilities.

Operations[edit]

Canopy Growth operates ten licensed cannabis production sites with over 4.3 million square feet of production capacity. It has operations in 12 countries across five continents. The company's brands include Tweed, Spectrum Therapeutics, and Tokyo Smoke, among others.

Partnerships and Acquisitions[edit]

Canopy Growth has made several strategic partnerships and acquisitions to expand its market presence. In 2017, it entered into a strategic partnership with Constellation Brands, a leading beverage alcohol company. In 2019, it acquired Acreage Holdings, a multi-state cannabis company based in the United States.

Research and Development[edit]

Canopy Growth is committed to advancing the understanding of cannabis and its derivatives through clinical research. The company has partnered with various research organizations and has a team of physicians, molecular biologists, plant scientists, and chemists to drive innovation in the cannabis industry.

Controversies[edit]

Like many companies in the emerging cannabis industry, Canopy Growth has faced its share of controversies. These include regulatory scrutiny, executive turnover, and financial performance issues.
