Interstitial Collagenase, also known as matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), is a crucial enzyme in the process of extracellular matrix degradation. This enzyme plays a significant role in various physiological and pathological processes, including tissue remodeling, wound healing, and the progression of diseases such as arthritis and cancer. Interstitial collagenase targets collagen, the most abundant protein in the mammalian extracellular matrix, specifically cleaving the collagen types I, II, and III at a single site.
