Tully's Coffee was founded by Tom O'Keefe in Seattle, Washington, in 1992. The company was named after the Irish folk hero Tully, reflecting O'Keefe's Irish heritage. Tully's aimed to provide a more relaxed and comfortable coffee shop experience compared to its competitors.

In 2009, Tully's Coffee filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company was subsequently acquired by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in 2009. In 2012, Tully's Coffee was sold to Global Baristas, a group led by actor Patrick Dempsey.
