Kentucky Vintage is a brand of bourbon whiskey produced in the United States. It is a small batch, premium bourbon aged for an unspecified number of years in charred, new oak barrels. The brand is owned by Willett Distillery, a family-owned company that has been producing bourbon for over five generations.
History
The history of Kentucky Vintage is closely tied to the history of the Willett Distillery. The distillery was founded in the late 1930s by Thompson Willett and his family on their farm in Bardstown, Kentucky. The first batch of bourbon was produced in 1936 and the distillery has been in operation ever since. Kentucky Vintage is one of several brands produced by the distillery.
Production
Like all bourbon, Kentucky Vintage is made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. The rest of the grain bill is made up of rye and malted barley. The grains are mixed with water and yeast to create a mash, which is then fermented and distilled. The distilled spirit is aged in new, charred oak barrels for a number of years. The exact age of Kentucky Vintage is not specified, but it is considered a "vintage" bourbon, which typically means it has been aged for at least 10 years.
Tasting Notes
Kentucky Vintage is known for its rich, full-bodied flavor. It has notes of caramel and vanilla, typical of many bourbons, but also has a unique spicy character that sets it apart. The finish is long and warm, with a hint of oak from the aging process.
