International Grains Council

The International Grains Council (IGC) is an intergovernmental organization that seeks to further international cooperation in grains trade. The IGC administers the Grains Trade Convention, 1995, which aims to promote the expansion of international trade in grains and to secure the freest possible flow of this trade. The IGC also provides a forum for the exchange of information and analysis on grains market developments.

History

The IGC was established in 1949 as the International Wheat Council under the International Wheat Agreement. It was later renamed the International Grains Council in 1995 to reflect its broader mandate covering a variety of grains, including wheat, maize, rice, and other cereals.

Objectives

The main objectives of the IGC are:

• To promote the expansion and openness of the international grains market.
• To enhance market transparency through the provision of timely and comprehensive market information.
• To encourage cooperation and dialogue among member countries on grains trade issues.

Membership

The IGC has a diverse membership that includes major grains exporting and importing countries. Membership is open to any country that is willing to adhere to the provisions of the Grains Trade Convention.

Structure

The IGC Secretariat, based in London, United Kingdom, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization.
