Lawrenceville is a neighborhood located in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is one of the largest neighborhood areas in Pittsburgh and is known for its vibrant arts scene, historic architecture, and thriving local businesses.
History
Lawrenceville was founded in 1814 by William B. Foster, father of composer Stephen Foster, who was born there in 1826. The neighborhood was named after Captain James Lawrence, a naval officer during the War of 1812. The area was originally a part of Pitt Township, but was annexed by the city of Pittsburgh in 1868.
Geography
Lawrenceville is located in the northeastern part of Pittsburgh, bordered by the Allegheny River to the north, Stanton Heights to the east, Bloomfield to the south, and the Strip District to the west. The neighborhood is divided into three sections: Upper Lawrenceville, Central Lawrenceville, and Lower Lawrenceville.
Culture
Lawrenceville is known for its vibrant arts scene. It is home to the Arsenal Bowl, a historic duckpin bowling alley, and the Row House Cinema, an independent movie theater. The neighborhood also hosts the annual Art All Night festival, which showcases local artists and performers.
