Work ethic is a set of values centered on the importance of work and its inherent value to an individual's character. A strong work ethic is vital to a person's career success.

Definition

Work ethic is a belief that hard work and diligence have a moral benefit and an inherent ability, virtue or value to strengthen character and individual abilities. It is a set of values centered on importance of work and manifested by determination or desire to work hard.

Historical context

The term work ethic is often traced back to Protestant work ethic, a concept in theology, sociology, economics and history which emphasizes that hard work, discipline, and frugality are a result of a person's subscription to the values espoused by the Protestant faith, particularly Calvinism.

Cultural variations

Work ethics vary by culture. For example, in many Asian cultures, there is a strong emphasis on the importance of hard work. In contrast, some European cultures place a higher value on the ability to enjoy leisure time and work-life balance.
