Further education

Further education (often abbreviated FE) in the United Kingdom and Ireland is education in addition to that received at secondary school, that is distinct from the higher education offered in university and other academic institutions. It may be at any level above compulsory secondary education, from basic skills training to higher vocational qualifications such as PGCE, NVQ, City and Guilds, BTEC, HNC, HND or foundation degree.

Further education is often seen as encompassing the vocational aspect of post-compulsory education, while higher education is more academically focused. However, the division between further and higher education can be blurred due to a crossover in course offerings and the level of qualifications offered in further education colleges.

Further Education in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, further education colleges offer a wide range of courses covering a variety of potential study areas. These can include A Levels, which are often required for university entry, as well as more vocational courses such as NVQs and BTECs. Further education colleges are also a provider of apprenticeships, where students combine working for a company with studying for a qualification.

Further Education in Ireland

In Ireland, further education has grown immensely in the last decade, with many Institutes of Technology offering programs in fields such as business, science, and engineering. These programs can lead to a certificate, diploma, or degree.
