An aquaretic is a novel class of drug that is used to promote aquaresis, the excretion of water without electrolyte loss. Strictly speaking, aquaretics are not diuretics, but are sometimes classified as such. Aquaresis is preferable to diuresis in the treatment of hyponatremia.
