ALDH1A1 (Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1 Family Member A1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ALDH1A1 gene. This protein is a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase family, a group of enzymes that are involved in the breakdown of aldehydes.

Function

ALDH1A1 is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of retinaldehyde to retinoic acid, an important signaling molecule in vertebrates. This enzyme also has a role in the detoxification of aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation.

Clinical significance

Alterations in the expression of ALDH1A1 have been linked to a variety of human diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. In particular, high levels of ALDH1A1 have been associated with poor prognosis in several types of cancer, including breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
