Vertex (anatomy)

The vertex in anatomy refers to the highest point on the human skull, lying approximately in the midline. It is used as a reference point in medicine and neurology for describing the location of other structures or pathologies in the brain.

Anatomical details

The vertex is located on the superior (top) surface of the skull, and is the point that is furthest from the base of the skull when the head is in the anatomical position. It is found near the posterior part of the sagittal suture, where the two parietal bones meet.

Clinical significance

The vertex is an important landmark in both clinical practice and medical research. In neurology, it is used as a reference point for the 10-20 system (EEG) in electroencephalography. In obstetrics, the term "vertex presentation" refers to the position of a fetus in the womb where the head is oriented downwards, and the vertex is the part of the head that will emerge first during a normal delivery.
