Vamana is a therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine from India. It is one of the five procedures of Panchakarma, which are intended to cleanse the body of toxins and balance the three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha.

Overview

Vamana is a medicated emesis therapy, which cleanses the Kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract. This is given to people with high Kapha imbalance. Daily treatment involves loosening and mobilizing the toxins in an effort to finally eliminate them.

Procedure

The procedure of Vamana starts with the consumption of a medicated ghee or oil for a period of 3 to 7 days. This is followed by a full body Abhyanga (massage) and Swedana (sweat therapy). After this, the patient is given herbal medicines to induce vomiting. The toxins are thus expelled through the mouth. The procedure is followed by rest, and a specific diet is advised for a few days.

Benefits

Vamana therapy is beneficial in treating diseases like bronchial asthma, chronic allergies, hay fever, vitiligo, psoriasis, hyperacidity, chronic indigestion, nasal congestion, edema, obesity, psychological disorders, skin disorders.

Precautions

Vamana should not be administered to people with heart diseases, hypertension, and certain other medical conditions. It should always be performed under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
