Trifluoronitrosomethane (also known as Nitrosyl Trifluoride and Trifluoromethane Nitroso) is a chemical compound with the formula CF3NO. It is a colorless, nonflammable gas that is used primarily in the chemical industry.

Chemical Properties

Trifluoronitrosomethane is a stable compound under normal conditions. It has a molecular weight of 105.01 g/mol and a boiling point of -5.4°C. The compound is soluble in water and most organic solvents. It is a strong oxidizer and can react violently with reducing agents and combustibles.

Synthesis

Trifluoronitrosomethane can be synthesized by the reaction of nitrosyl chloride with fluorine in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction is highly exothermic and must be carried out under controlled conditions to prevent explosion.

Applications

Trifluoronitrosomethane is used in the chemical industry as a fluorinating agent. It is also used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. In addition, it is used in the production of fluoropolymers, which are used in a wide range of applications, including non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and high-performance lubricants.

Safety

Trifluoronitrosomethane is a strong oxidizer and can react violently with reducing agents and combustibles. It can cause burns and eye damage. Therefore, it should be handled with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment.
