Snowbird is an unincorporated community and ski resort in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is located in the Little Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. Snowbird is known for its long ski season, which often lasts from November to May, and its challenging terrain.

History[edit]

Snowbird was founded in 1971 by Ted Johnson and Dick Bass. Johnson, a local miner, had the vision to develop a ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon. He partnered with Bass, a Texas oilman, to bring this vision to life. The resort opened in December 1971 and quickly gained a reputation for its deep powder snow and steep slopes.

Geography[edit]

Snowbird is situated in the Little Cottonwood Canyon, approximately 29 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. The resort spans over 2,500 acres and includes a variety of terrain suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. The area is known for its heavy snowfall, averaging over 500 inches annually.

Facilities[edit]

Snowbird offers a range of facilities for visitors, including:

  • The Snowbird Center, which houses restaurants, shops, and rental services.
  • The Cliff Lodge, a luxury hotel with spa services and conference facilities.
  • The Aerial Tram, which provides access to the summit of Hidden Peak at 11,000 feet.
  • Multiple chairlifts and gondolas that service the resort's extensive trail system.

Activities[edit]

While Snowbird is primarily known for its winter sports, it also offers a variety of summer activities, including:

  • Hiking and mountain biking on numerous trails.
  • The Snowbird Oktoberfest, an annual event celebrating German culture with food, music, and activities.
  • The Mountain Coaster and Alpine Slide, which provide thrilling rides down the mountain.

Climate[edit]

Snowbird has a subarctic climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The high elevation contributes to the heavy snowfall and long ski season. Summer temperatures are generally mild, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities year-round.
