Lee Saunders

Lee Saunders is an American labor leader and the president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), a prominent public services employees union in the United States. He has been a significant figure in the labor movement, advocating for workers' rights and public services.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Lee Saunders was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. He later received a master's degree in labor and industrial relations from the University of Michigan.

Career[edit]

Saunders began his career in the labor movement as a labor economist for AFSCME. Over the years, he held various positions within the union, including assistant director of research and collective bargaining services, and deputy administrator of AFSCME's District Council 37 in New York City.

In 2012, Saunders was elected president of AFSCME, becoming the first African American to hold the position. Under his leadership, AFSCME has focused on issues such as fair wages, healthcare, retirement security, and workers' rights.
