Impact Comics was an imprint of DC Comics that was aimed at younger readers. It was launched in 1991 and featured a line of superhero comics that were based on characters licensed from Archie Comics. The imprint was part of an effort to create a new, more accessible line of comics that could appeal to a younger audience and potentially be used in educational settings.

History[edit]

Impact Comics was created as a joint venture between DC Comics and Archie Comics. The characters featured in the Impact Comics line were originally part of the MLJ Comics line, which was the predecessor to Archie Comics. These characters included The Shield, The Fly, The Comet, The Jaguar, and The Web.

The imprint was launched with a series of titles that introduced these characters to a new generation of readers. The initial lineup included:

Titles and Characters[edit]

The titles under the Impact Comics imprint were designed to be more accessible to younger readers, with simpler storylines and a focus on action and adventure. The characters were reimagined with modern sensibilities, but retained their core identities and powers.

  • The Shield - A patriotic superhero with enhanced strength and durability.
  • The Fly - A young boy who gains the ability to fly and other insect-like powers.
  • The Comet - A hero with the power to manipulate energy and fly.
  • The Jaguar - A character with the ability to transform into a powerful jaguar-like creature.
  • The Web - A superhero with a high-tech suit that grants him various abilities.

Legacy[edit]

Despite the initial enthusiasm, Impact Comics struggled to find a large audience and the line was discontinued in 1993. However, the characters and concepts introduced in the Impact Comics line have continued to influence later iterations of these heroes in various forms.
