Solution (medicine)

A solution in the context of medicine refers to a homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. In such a mixture, a solute is a substance dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent. The mixing process of a solute in a solvent is called solution.

Types of Solutions[edit]

There are several types of solutions used in the medical field, including:

  • Intravenous solutions: These are solutions used for injection or infusion into the veins. They are commonly used to rehydrate patients or to provide necessary nutrients when oral intake is not possible.
  • Topical solutions: These are solutions applied directly to the skin or mucous membranes. They are used to treat a variety of conditions, from skin infections to pain relief.

Preparation of Solutions[edit]

The preparation of medical solutions involves careful measurement and mixing of ingredients to achieve the desired concentration. This process is typically carried out in a pharmacy under sterile conditions.

Safety and Risks[edit]

While medical solutions are generally safe when used as directed, there can be risks associated with their use. These can include allergic reactions, infection from non-sterile solutions, or adverse effects from incorrect dosage or administration.
