Puri is a city and a Municipality in the state of Odisha, India. It is one of the original Char Dham pilgrimage sites for Hindus and is known for its historic antiquities, religious sanctuaries, architectural grandeur, seascape beauty, and its moderate climate.

History[edit]

Puri has a rich historical and cultural background. It was under the rule of the Kalinga kingdom, and later became a part of the Maurya Empire. The city was also a part of the Gajapati Kingdom which had a significant influence on its architecture and culture.

Geography[edit]

Puri is located on the eastern coast of India, on the Bay of Bengal. The city is situated at an average elevation of 0 meters (0 feet) above sea level.
