Overview[edit]

DCMU (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea), also known as Diuron, is a chemical compound used primarily as an herbicide. It is a member of the phenylurea class of herbicides and functions by inhibiting photosynthesis in plants. DCMU is particularly effective against a wide range of annual and perennial weeds.

Mechanism of Action[edit]

DCMU acts by blocking the photosystem II complex in the photosynthetic electron transport chain. It binds to the D1 protein of the photosystem II complex, preventing the transfer of electrons from plastoquinone to the cytochrome b6f complex. This inhibition disrupts the normal flow of electrons, effectively halting the process of photosynthesis and leading to the death of the plant.

Applications[edit]

DCMU is widely used in agriculture to control weeds in crops such as cotton, sugarcane, and fruit orchards. It is also used in non-crop areas such as railways, industrial sites, and roadsides to manage unwanted vegetation.
