Interferon alfa is a type of protein and antiviral or anticancer drug. It is a form of interferon, which are proteins released by the body's immune cells in response to viral infections. Interferon alfa is produced in a laboratory and used as a treatment for several types of cancer and hepatitis.

Interferon alfa was first identified in the late 1950s by two researchers, Alick Isaacs and Jean Lindenmann. Medical uses[edit]

Mechanism of action[edit]

Interferon alfa works by stimulating the body's immune system to attack cancer cells or viral infections. In cancer treatment, it can slow tumor growth and stimulate immune cells to attack cancer cells.
