ICECI (International Classification of External Causes of Injuries) is a classification system used in the field of medicine and public health to categorize the external causes of injuries. It is developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is part of the Family of International Classifications (FIC).

Overview[edit]

The ICECI provides a detailed coding system for classifying external causes of injuries, poisoning, and other adverse events. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), which classifies diseases and health conditions, but does not provide detailed information on external causes of injuries.

The ICECI includes codes for:

  • The nature of the activity being undertaken at the time of the event
  • The place where the event occurred
  • The products, substances, and environmental factors involved in the event
  • The type of event (e.g., transport accident, fall, assault)
  • The mechanism of injury (e.g., struck by/against, cut/pierce, burn/fire)

Usage[edit]

The ICECI is used by health professionals, researchers, and policy makers to collect, analyze, and interpret data on the external causes of injuries. This information can be used to identify patterns and trends in injury occurrence, develop and evaluate injury prevention strategies, and inform policy and planning.
