Hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within the service industry that includes lodging, food and drink service, event planning, theme parks, and transportation. It includes hotels, tourism agencies, restaurants and bars.
Overview
The hospitality industry is a multibillion-dollar industry that depends on the availability of leisure time and disposable income. A hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel, or an amusement park consists of multiple groups such as facility maintenance and direct operations (servers, housekeepers, porters, kitchen workers, bartenders, management, marketing, and human resources etc.).
Sectors of the Hospitality Industry
The hospitality industry is divided into sectors according to the skill-sets required for the work involved. Sectors include accommodation, food and beverage, meeting and events, gaming, entertainment and recreation, tourism services, and visitor information.
Accommodation
Also known as the hotel sector, it is one of the largest and most profitable sectors in the hospitality industry. It includes hotels, motels, backpacker hostels, bed and breakfasts, resorts, inns, serviced apartments, and timeshares.
Food and Beverage
The food and beverage sector which is professionally known by its initials as F&B is the largest segment of the hospitality industry. It includes restaurants, fast food chains, and caterers.
Meeting and Events
The MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector is a type of tourism in which large groups, usually planned well in advance, are brought together for a particular purpose.
Gaming
The gaming sector is frequently associated with the hospitality industry and has significant overlap with it.
Entertainment and Recreation
The entertainment and recreation sector includes any physical location that provides entertainment and recreational facilities.
Tourism Services
Tourism services support industry groups to sustain tourism products. It includes tour operators, travel agents, and guide services.
Visitor Information
Visitor information services are provided by governments and tourism offices. They provide information about the local area, accommodation options, transport, activities, attractions, and dining options.
