The University of Pretoria (UP) is a multi-campus public research university in Pretoria, the administrative and de facto capital of South Africa. The university was established in 1908 as the Pretoria campus of the Johannesburg-based Transvaal University College and is the fourth South African institution in continuous operation to be awarded university status.

History[edit]

The University of Pretoria was founded in 1908 as the Pretoria campus of the Transvaal University College. Initially, it had 32 students and four professors in a single late Victorian house. In 1910, the university moved to its current location in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria. The institution gained university status in 1930 and became the University of Pretoria.

Campuses[edit]

The University of Pretoria has seven suburban campuses and a number of other sites of operation, such as the Pretoria Academic Hospital. The main campus, known as the Hatfield Campus, is located in the suburb of Hatfield.

Academics[edit]

The University of Pretoria offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is organized into nine faculties and a business school. The faculties include Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, and others.

Research[edit]

The University of Pretoria is a leading research university in South Africa. It is home to several research institutes and centers, including the Centre for Human Rights and the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

Student Life[edit]

The university has a vibrant student life with numerous student organizations, sports clubs, and cultural activities. The TuksSport is the university's sports department, which supports a wide range of sports.

Notable Alumni[edit]

The University of Pretoria has produced many notable alumni, including Nelson Mandela, who received an honorary doctorate from the university, and Elon Musk, who attended the university briefly.
