UQCRQ (Ubiquinol-Cytochrome C Reductase Complex III Subunit VII) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the UQCRQ gene. This protein is a component of the ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase complex (complex III or cytochrome bc1 complex), which is part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
Function
The UQCRQ protein is one of several proteins that form the ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase complex, an essential part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. This complex, which is also known as complex III, is responsible for the transfer of electrons from ubiquinol to cytochrome c, a process that is essential for cellular respiration.
Clinical significance
Mutations in the UQCRQ gene have been associated with mitochondrial complex III deficiency, a rare genetic disorder that can cause a variety of clinical symptoms, including muscle weakness, growth retardation, and lactic acidosis.
