Puducherry (formerly known as Pondicherry) is a Union Territory of India. It was formed out of four enclaves of former French India, namely Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam.

Puducherry has a rich history influenced by French colonialism. The city of Pondicherry was established in 1674 as a French colony. It remained under French control until 1954, when it was incorporated into the Republic of India.
