Breed of cat
The Pixie-bob is a domestic cat breed that is reputed to be the progeny of naturally occurring bobcat hybrids. However, DNA testing has failed to detect any bobcat marker genes in the breed. The Pixie-bob is known for its wild appearance, reminiscent of the North American bobcat, and its friendly, dog-like personality.
History[edit]
The Pixie-bob breed originated in the United States in the 1980s. The breed was founded by Carol Ann Brewer, who acquired a male cat with a bobbed tail in 1985. This cat, named "Pixie," became the foundation of the breed. Brewer believed that Pixie was the result of a natural mating between a domestic cat and a bobcat, although this claim has not been scientifically verified.
Physical Characteristics[edit]
Pixie-bobs are medium to large cats with a muscular build. They have a distinctive wild appearance, characterized by a heavy brow, bushy eyebrows, and a bobbed tail. Their coats are dense and can be either short or long, with a spotted tabby pattern. The eyes are typically gold or green.
Size[edit]
Pixie-bobs are known for their substantial size, with males typically weighing between 12 to 17 pounds and females weighing between 8 to 12 pounds.
Coat[edit]
The coat of a Pixie-bob is soft and woolly, providing insulation and a wild look. The breed standard allows for both short-haired and long-haired varieties.
Personality[edit]
Pixie-bobs are often described as having a "dog-like" personality. They are highly social, enjoy human companionship, and can be trained to walk on a leash. They are known for their intelligence and playful nature, making them excellent family pets.
Health[edit]
Pixie-bobs are generally healthy cats, but like all breeds, they can be prone to certain genetic conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy diet are recommended to maintain their well-being.
Recognition[edit]
The Pixie-bob is recognized by major cat registries, including The International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA). The breed has gained popularity due to its unique appearance and friendly demeanor.
