The Frontierland Shootin' Arcade is an interactive shooting gallery attraction located in the Frontierland section of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. The attraction simulates a shooting gallery set in the American Old West, allowing guests to test their marksmanship skills.
History[edit]
The Frontierland Shootin' Arcade opened on October 1, 1971, as one of the original attractions of the Magic Kingdom. It was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative division of The Walt Disney Company responsible for designing and building Disney theme parks and attractions.
Attraction Details[edit]
The Frontierland Shootin' Arcade is themed to resemble a classic Old West shooting gallery. Guests use replica rifles to shoot at various targets, which are designed to look like objects and characters from the frontier era. The targets are equipped with sensors that register hits, triggering animations and sound effects.
The rifles used in the attraction originally fired lead pellets, but due to environmental concerns, they were replaced with infrared beams in the 1980s. This change allowed for a more sustainable and safe experience for guests and the environment.
Experience[edit]
Upon entering the arcade, guests are greeted with the sights and sounds of the Old West. The attraction features a variety of targets, including moving and stationary objects, each with its own unique animation or sound effect when hit. The targets are set against a backdrop of a western town, complete with saloons, a jail, and other iconic frontier buildings.
Guests purchase tokens to activate the rifles, and each token provides a set number of shots. The arcade is a popular attraction for guests of all ages, offering a fun and interactive experience that tests their aim and reflexes.
Cultural Impact[edit]
The Frontierland Shootin' Arcade is a nostalgic attraction that harkens back to the days of classic amusement park shooting galleries. It has remained a staple of the Magic Kingdom's Frontierland, providing a unique and engaging experience that complements the area's western theme.
