The NFL International Series is a part of the National Football League (NFL)'s ongoing effort to promote American football globally. Initiated in 2007, the series consists of regular-season NFL games played outside the United States. The majority of these games have been held in London, England, with additional games in Mexico City, Mexico, and plans for future games in other countries.

History[edit]

The NFL International Series began in 2007 with a match between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants at Wembley Stadium in London. This marked the first regular-season NFL game played outside North America. The success of this game led to the establishment of annual games in London, and eventually, the inclusion of games in Mexico City.

Expansion[edit]

Over the years, the series has expanded in terms of the number of games and participating teams. Initially, only one game per year was played. However, this number has grown, with up to four games being held in London in recent seasons. The series has featured a variety of teams from across the NFL, showcasing different matchups to the international audience.

Venues[edit]

The primary venue for the London games has been Wembley Stadium, but other venues such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Twickenham Stadium have also hosted matches. In Mexico, the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City has been the venue of choice.

Impact[edit]

The NFL International Series has had a significant impact on the growth of American football's popularity worldwide. It has helped to cultivate a fan base outside the United States, with a notable increase in NFL viewership and merchandise sales in Europe and Mexico. The series has also influenced other sports leagues to consider international expansion.

Future Plans[edit]

The NFL has expressed interest in further expanding the International Series, potentially including games in countries such as Germany, Brazil, and Australia. These efforts are part of the league's broader strategy to develop a global fan base and increase international revenue streams.
