Ceremony where two people are united in marriage
Wedding
A wedding is a ceremony where two people are united in marriage. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by the couple, presentation of a gift (offering, rings, symbolic item, flowers, money), and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure or celebrant. Special wedding garments are often worn, and the ceremony is sometimes followed by a wedding reception. Music, poetry, prayers, or readings from religious texts or literature are also commonly incorporated into the ceremony.
History[edit]
The history of weddings dates back to ancient times. In many cultures, weddings were arranged by families and were seen as a way to form alliances and strengthen social ties. The concept of romantic love as a basis for marriage is a relatively modern development.
Types of Weddings[edit]
There are various types of weddings, including:
- Religious weddings: These are conducted according to the traditions of a specific religion. Examples include Christian weddings, Hindu weddings, Jewish weddings, and Islamic weddings.
- Civil weddings: These are conducted by a government official and do not follow any religious traditions.
- Destination weddings: These are held in a location away from the couple's hometown, often in a scenic or exotic location.
- Same-sex weddings: These are weddings between two people of the same sex and are legally recognized in many countries.
Wedding Attire[edit]
The attire worn at weddings varies by culture and religion. In Western cultures, the bride often wears a white dress and the groom a suit or tuxedo. In other cultures, traditional garments are worn. For example, in Indian weddings, the bride may wear a sari or lehenga, and the groom may wear a sherwani.
Wedding Ceremony[edit]
The wedding ceremony itself can include various elements, such as:
- Processional: The entrance of the wedding party.
- Exchange of vows: The couple makes promises to each other.
- Exchange of rings: The couple gives each other rings as a symbol of their commitment.
- Pronouncement: The officiant declares the couple married.
- Recessional: The exit of the wedding party.
Wedding Reception[edit]
A wedding reception is a party held after the completion of a marriage ceremony. It is a celebration of the newlyweds' union and can include food, music, dancing, and other entertainment. Common elements of a wedding reception include:
- Wedding cake: A special cake that is often elaborately decorated.
- Toasts: Speeches given by the best man, maid of honor, and other guests.
- First dance: The first dance of the married couple.
- Bouquet toss: The bride throws her bouquet to a group of single women.
