Fisons

Fisons is a British multinational pharmaceutical, scientific instruments and horticultural company. It was founded in 1843 in Ipswich, UK, by Edward Packard, a pioneer of the British chemical industry. He was joined by his sons, and the company, originally called Packard and Sons, manufactured fertilizers. In 1863, the company became Packard and James Fison (James Fison), and in the 1920s, it was renamed Fisons Ltd.

History

Fisons began as a fertilizer manufacturer. In the 1950s, the company began to diversify into pharmaceuticals. The company's pharmaceutical division was its most profitable business segment. Fisons' research in pharmaceuticals and other areas of healthcare led to the introduction of several innovative products, including the first UK-produced inhaler for asthma treatment, the Fisons Pharmaceuticals Inhaler.

Pharmaceuticals

Fisons' pharmaceutical products were diverse. The company was known for its pioneering work in asthma treatment. In the 1960s, Fisons introduced the first pressurized aerosol inhaler. This was a significant advancement in the treatment of asthma, as it provided a more effective and convenient method for delivering medication.

Scientific Instruments

In addition to pharmaceuticals, Fisons also manufactured scientific instruments. These were used in various fields, including environmental science, drug discovery and materials science. The company's instruments division was known for its innovation and quality.

Horticulture

Acquisition

In 1995, Fisons was acquired by the American company Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, which later became part of Sanofi-Aventis.
