Timothy Kopra (born April 9, 1963) is an American engineer, astronaut, and retired U.S. Army Colonel. He is best known for his work with NASA and his participation in various International Space Station (ISS) missions.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Kopra was born in Austin, Texas. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 1985. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1995, and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School in 2013.
Military Career[edit]
After graduating from West Point, Kopra served in the United States Army as an aviation officer. He held various leadership and staff positions, and was deployed for Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel.
NASA Career[edit]
Kopra joined NASA in 1998 as part of the NASA Astronaut Group 17. He has participated in several missions to the ISS, including Expedition 20, Expedition 46, and Expedition 47. During his time in space, he performed various scientific experiments and spacewalks.
Personal Life[edit]
Kopra is married and has two children. He enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and skiing.
Awards and Honors[edit]
Kopra has received numerous awards and honors for his service, including the NASA Space Flight Medal, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
