Project AWARE is a global movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet – one dive at a time. Driven by the values and desires of the international diving community, Project AWARE (non-profit) leads campaigns, conducts research and implements policy changes to prevent the death of the most vulnerable underwater species and decrease pollution.
History
Project AWARE was established in 1989 by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), a leading scuba diver training organization. The initiative was initially focused on educating divers about environmental issues. It became a registered non-profit in the United States in 1992.
Mission
The mission of Project AWARE is to connect the passion for ocean adventure with the purpose of marine conservation. It aims to create a powerful community for change, and seeks to inspire, persuade and inform people to work together for a clean, healthy ocean.
Programs
Project AWARE runs two main campaigns: Dive Against Debris and Sharks in Peril.
Dive Against Debris is a year-round global survey of underwater litter. Divers report the types, quantities, and locations of materials collected.
Sharks in Peril focuses on the issues of overfishing and shark finning, advocating for national and global protections for shark species.
Impact
Project AWARE has made significant contributions to marine conservation. It has removed tons of trash from the ocean, protected vulnerable shark and ray species, and influenced policies in various countries.
