Medical imaging in pregnancy refers to the use of non-invasive imaging techniques to visualize and diagnose conditions related to pregnancy. CT scans are rarely used in pregnancy due to the risk associated with ionizing radiation. However, in certain situations where the benefit outweighs the risk, such as in emergencies or when other imaging techniques are not sufficient, CT scans may be used.

Risks and Considerations[edit]

While medical imaging in pregnancy is generally considered safe, there are potential risks and considerations. The main concern is the potential harm to the fetus from exposure to ionizing radiation, which is associated with CT scans. Other considerations include the discomfort to the mother from the imaging procedure and the potential for false-positive or false-negative results.
