Martin Balluch is an Austrian animal rights activist and physicist. He is one of the leading figures in the animal rights movement in Austria and co-founder of the Association Against Animal Factories (Verein Gegen Tierfabriken or VGT).

Early Life and Education[edit]

Martin Balluch was born in Vienna, Austria. He studied physics and mathematics at the University of Vienna and later at the University of Heidelberg, where he received his PhD in theoretical physics.

Career[edit]

After completing his studies, Balluch worked as a university assistant and researcher in the field of theoretical physics. However, his passion for animal rights led him to leave his academic career and dedicate himself to the cause of animal rights.

In 1997, he co-founded the Association Against Animal Factories (VGT), an organization that campaigns against animal cruelty and promotes veganism. Under his leadership, the VGT has been instrumental in achieving significant legislative changes in Austria, including a ban on fur farming and improvements in the conditions of animals in factory farms.

Activism and Legal Issues[edit]

Balluch's activism has often brought him into conflict with the authorities. In 2008, he was arrested and held in pre-trial detention for over three months on charges of forming a criminal organization, a case that became known as the Austrian animal rights trial. The charges were eventually dropped, but the case sparked a debate about the limits of activism and the right to protest.

Personal Life[edit]

Balluch is a committed vegan and lives with several rescued animals. He has written several books on animal rights and veganism, and is a frequent speaker at conferences and events.
