Haryana is a state in Northern India with its capital as Chandigarh. It is surrounded by Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the north, and by Rajasthan to the west and south. The eastern border to Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, and includes the country's capital city of New Delhi. This makes it a part of the National Capital Region (NCR).
History[edit]
Haryana has a rich historical background and was the home of the legendary Bharata dynasty, which has been integral to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The region was later incorporated into the Maurya Empire and the Gupta Empire.
Geography[edit]
Haryana is a landlocked state in northern India. It is between 27°39' to 30°35' N latitude and between 74°28' and 77°36' E longitude. The altitude of Haryana varies between 700 to 3600 ft (200 metres to 1200 metres) above sea level.
Economy[edit]
Haryana's economy largely depends on agriculture, with the state being one of the largest contributors of green vegetables, fruits and grain to India. Haryana is also an industrial hub and has a significant presence in industries such as textiles, automobiles, and information technology.
Culture[edit]
Haryana's culture is reflective of its folklore. The state is rich in traditional music and dance, folk theatre, cuisine, and crafts. The people of Haryana follow a simple lifestyle and the majority of the population is engaged in agriculture and allied industries.
Education[edit]
Haryana has a number of reputed educational institutions. These include Kurukshetra University, Maharshi Dayanand University, and Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University. The state government has made significant efforts in the field of education which includes opening of several new universities and colleges across the state.
Politics[edit]
The politics of Haryana takes place through its parliamentary system of representative democracy, a feature the state shares with other Indian states. The Governor of Haryana is the ceremonial head of state, while the real executive power rests with the Chief Minister of Haryana and his/her council of ministers.
