Avellino is a city and comune, located in the Campania region, in Southern Italy, within the province of Avellino. It is the administrative capital of the province of Avellino and is an important hub of the region.

History[edit]

The city of Avellino has a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period. It was later inhabited by the Osci, a people of central Italy, and then by the Romans. The city was known as Abellinum under Roman rule.

Geography[edit]

Avellino is situated in a plain surrounded by mountains 47 kilometers east of Naples. It is located at the base of Mount Partenio. The city is crossed by the rivers Sabato and Calore.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Avellino is mainly based on agriculture, commerce, services, and small-scale industries. The region is famous for its vineyards and wine production, particularly the Taurasi wine. It is also known for the production of hazelnuts, which are used in the confectionery industry.
