Sanford Bennett

Sanford Bennett (1841-1926) was an American songwriter and pharmacist. He is best known for his song "Sweet By and By", which has become a popular hymn and is often played at funerals.

Early Life

Bennett was born in Fulton County, Illinois on June 21, 1841. He was the son of William Bennett and Mary Sanford Bennett. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker.

Career

Bennett began his career as a pharmacist in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. He later moved to Richland Center, Wisconsin where he continued his pharmacy business.

In addition to his pharmacy business, Bennett was also a songwriter. He wrote several popular songs during his lifetime, but his most famous song is "Sweet By and By". The song was written in 1868 and has since become a popular hymn.

Personal Life

Bennett was married to Mary Bennett. They had two children together, William Bennett Jr. and Mary Bennett Jr..

Death

Bennett died on May 6, 1926 in Richland Center, Wisconsin. He was 84 years old at the time of his death.

Legacy

Bennett's song "Sweet By and By" continues to be played at funerals and other religious ceremonies. It has been covered by several artists and is considered a classic hymn.
