The first Great American Cookies store was opened in Atlanta, Georgia by Michael Coles and Arthur Karp, who were inspired by a passed-down family recipe. The company quickly expanded and by the 1980s, it had stores across the United States. In 1998, the company was purchased by NexCen Brands Inc., a global brand management company.
